Established in 2019, AUIB expanded to nine colleges while aligning academic affairs, corporate engagement, global engagement, innovation and development, student affairs, and marketing and communications around shared institutional goals. Since 2023, CEN has signed several institutional agreements across nine countries, including the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST), the University of Edinburgh, Queen’s University Canada, and the University of Texas at Dallas, creating 4+1 accelerated master’s and dual-degree pathways. Teaching more than 1,700 students annually across six courses, I prioritise closing the distance created by scale through human-centred engagement. Central to my pedagogy is strengthening empathy and addressing implicit bias, notably through the “Top Drug Meme Project”. This initiative uses student-generated content to spark dialogue about stereotyping and the treatment of vulnerable populations. Furthermore, I utilise my co-produced film, The Glasses, to foster cross-cultural empathy regarding caregiver burden and healthcare bureaucracy. My commitment to knowledge translation is evidenced by RAMCOM, a clinical framework for diabetes management during Ramadan used internationally. Beyond the classroom, I lead PharmaCore, guiding students in community health campaigns and peer-reviewed research. My work seeks to harmonise teaching, research and practice, aiming for a lasting impact on how students perceive and provide care.

Recoverable trimmings become natural stock powder, while organic waste feeds campus herb plots that return ingredients to the kitchen. Students coached by Maysaa won gold and bronze medals in 2025. Her national baking team made history at the Mondial du Pain as the first all-female Arab team to participate. Maysaa received the Mondial du Pain Coach Medal. Her graduates leave her kitchen convinced that sustainability is non-negotiable, carrying that conviction into every kitchen they will ever lead. In 2025, I redesigned GRD411 Graduation Project in Graphic Design for Media from a final academic requirement into a bridge between learning, inclusion, professional practice and real-world impact. Guided by Education for Sustainable Development, I built a 16-week active-learning journey, where students became researchers, designers and problem-solvers, developing ideas into visual systems, prototypes and public presentations. The course became outward-facing through links with Ajman University Innovation Center, the Community Unit and Sustainability Unit, supporting SDGs, start-up branding, copyright awareness, incubation, volunteering and professional pathways. Students used generative artificial intelligence, 3D tools, augmented reality and virtual environments ethically to create accessible, interactive and future-ready communication solutions. The strongest evidence was inclusion: Houda, a student of determination, turned her graduation project into a drawing workshop with the Inclusive Unit and was recognised in AU Voice Magazine. For me, the graduation project became agency, confidence, professional readiness and sustainable impact beyond traditional classroom assessment.

Upon joining Alamein International University, Eslam Yacoub encountered a paradox: a fully English-medium university in which the vast majority of students had never been taught in English. Rather than accepting this as an unchangeable reality, he built an entire language ecosystem from the ground up – a diagnostic placement test, foundational English courses, bilingual disciplinary glossaries, a complete suite of English for Specific Purposes courses tailored to every programme, an academic writing course, a peer mentorship network, and a weekly conversation club. Each intervention was evidence-based, professionally grounded and student-centred. The cumulative impact of this work led directly to the founding an English Learning Centre. Yacoub’s innovations have since reached international peer-reviewed journals, carrying AIU’s model to the global English for Specific Purposes community. In a single year, he turned a systemic gap into a university-wide movement – and a language barrier into a bridge.

In 2025, New York University Abu Dhabi’s Palm Teaching Award recipient built a locally hosted, privacy-preserving AI ecosystem that transforms GenAI from an answer machine into a course-governed tutor. The system reflects her pedagogy of precision: sequenced objectives, randomised problem architectures, worked solution models, feedback protocols and metacognitive scaffolds that help students notice structure, test ideas, repair errors and build reasoning step by step. It also reflects her care-centred teaching: students are supported through challenge with precise feedback, reflection, confidence-building and belonging. In summer 2025, four repeating students passed; mean final exam improvement was +214.2 per cent; explanation and feedback were rated 5.00/5.00. Institution-led research has mapped P. juliflora’s expansion from 0.2 km² (1990) to 16 km² (2019), with groundwater consumption reaching 22.22 million m³ per year – a 7,372 per cent increase over three decades. Launched in 2023, this integrated initiative unites community-based mangrove restoration with AI-powered satellite monitoring under one geospatial intelligence system. By 2025, more than 3,300 mangroves had been planted, 1,000+ community members engaged, and up to 990,000 tonnes of CO₂ sequestration potential secured. Random Forest classifiers achieve F1 accuracy above 0.90 in multi-temporal mangrove mapping. The initiative won the Gold Award at the QS Reimagine Education Awards 2024 (Middle East). In the West Bank, emergency childbirth is affected by checkpoints, road closures and villages isolated behind the separation wall. In March 2025, Palestine Ahliya University launched PalWell, a licensed digital platform connecting mothers with nearby midwives through GPS technology. The platform includes a citizen application, a midwife application with live routing and automatic reassignment, and an operator dashboard with live tracking and performance logging. In its first 14 months in Bethlehem governorate, PalWell reduced emergency response time from 82 minutes to 26 minutes. Forty-one licensed midwives processed 86 emergency requests and provided care to 72 mothers. Eighty-six per cent of requests successfully reached a midwife, while 91 per cent of beneficiaries reported satisfaction. Through partnerships with the Palestinian Midwives Syndicate, the Ministry of Health and local municipalities, PalWell established permanent Palestinian-owned digital health infrastructure supporting emergency maternal care under movement restrictions.

King Saud University transformed academic advising into a student-centred, data-driven ecosystem through EDUgate, the university’s official academic portal and student information system. The initiative addressed inconsistent advising practices, limited engagement channels and challenges in identifying academically at-risk students. The project introduced real-time advising analytics, early warning indicators and direct communication channels between students and academic advisers, while embedding advising within institutional governance and faculty workload policies. This strengthened collaboration among students, faculty members and academic leadership and positioned advising as a core component of student experience. Between 2022-23 and 2025-26, the number of academic advisers increased from 2,682 to 3,190, with the student-to-adviser ratio reaching 21.3 students per adviser. Student awareness and engagement with advising services reached 89.9 per cent, while student satisfaction reached 67 per cent. More than 68,000 students are now connected to academic advisers, representing 93 per cent university-wide coverage.

In 2025, the governorate of Bethlehem documented more than 2,000 violations by occupation forces, including arrests, assaults, injuries, demolitions and military incursions. In this context, Palestine Ahliya University launched the Youth-Friendly Health Space (YFHS) Emergency Preparedness Program, the first university health unit in Palestine integrating accredited physical first aid, civil defence and psychological first aid. Training, certified by PMRS, the Paramedics Syndicate, and Civil Defense, follows Red Cross, Red Crescent, WHO and IASC standards. Ten first aid kits and two advanced PMRS bags support campus preparedness, while a student-led first aid team remains active year-round. In its first year, the programme reached nearly 500 students. Readiness levels increased from 6 per cent to 73 per cent after training, with practical knowledge scores reaching 86 per cent. The last decade in Anbar Province produced 162 students at Al-Maarif University whose bodies and futures bear the visible cost of war and violent extremism. Al-Maarif Care is the university’s institutional response. The programme reframes support as a full arc from injury to leadership: every student receives 100 per cent financial coverage, every entrance and classroom is accessible, and each student is paired with a peer assistant trained in trauma-informed mentoring. Named partnerships span the Iraqi Ministry of Health, the Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs, the UNICEF Iraq Office, the Anbar Provincial Council and the Anbar Chamber of Commerce. The cumulative graduation rate stands at 16.5 per cent, against an international rate of 8 per cent to 12 per cent (UNESCO), with 25 graduates already employed and procedures under way for the remaining six. The initiative was inaugurated through its flagship project, Forensic Linguistics in the Digital Era, which critically examined judicial discourse and algorithmic governance across large-scale Arabic and multilingual corpora. This foundational phase established the conceptual-methodological framework for phase two, which expands the inquiry into AI-generated identities, platform governance and synthetic media. Capturing the public imagination, the initiative reached over 200,000 people through digital dissemination. The question facing today’s parents is no longer whether young children live a digital life, because they already do, but rather how to ensure that this engagement is beneficial. This research, conducted in the United Arab Emirates, moves beyond aggregate screen time to analyse the real-time dynamics of how children under eight interact with technology. By event-coding screen recordings of 130 children in Abu Dhabi, we identified five distinct digital engagement profiles, ranging from “focused” to “interrupt-driven”. A key finding was that parental presence acts as a powerful regulator; 74.4 per cent of children shifted their behavioural profile when a parent joined the interaction, moving away from fragmented patterns toward more stable, focused play. These results were consistent across genders and ethnicities. This project provides a new framework for parents and policymakers to move beyond simple restrictions, fostering a digital ecosystem that prioritises social connection and high-quality, focused patterns of digital play.

Its central output was the play Wadad Halwani: An Ant that Digs in Stone, based on the story of activist Wadad Halwani, whose husband disappeared during the Lebanese Civil War. Drawing on extensive archival research, oral histories, legal analysis and activist testimony, the project documented women’s roles in justice movements and the issue of enforced disappearance. Performed at LAU, Beit Beirut and schools and universities across Lebanon, each performance was followed by discussions fostering intergenerational dialogue. The project also raised awareness of Law 105 (2018) and demonstrated theatre’s capacity to communicate complex research to wider publics.

A team of eight researchers led by Yasir Mohammed Hammood and Labeeb Zouyan Moseekh works in three strands: experimental training trials on Iraqi clubs including Ramadi Football Club; Arabic-adapted psychometric tool development; and observational research on the Iraqi Premier League. The programme has produced at least 10 Scopus-indexed peer-reviewed articles across 2024 and 2025; the flagship 2025 paper on play-based football training reached a field-weighted citation impact of 5.43, more than five times the world average, in a journal in the top 6 per cent of its field. Findings have been piloted by Ramadi Football Club and have informed institutional well-being reviews. The college is formalising a research unit to host the programme through 2030.

PharmaGuard AI addresses the overlooked risk of heavy metal contamination in herbal supplements, a significant concern given their widespread use and the weak quality control in many markets. Despite their image as safe, many herbal products contain toxic metals such as lead, cadmium, mercury and arsenic because of environmental and manufacturing factors. This risk is especially relevant in the UAE, where a national study reported that 98.7 per cent of adults used herbal medicines. The project proposes a low-cost screening system combining biochar from date palm waste, paper-based microfluidic strips and an edge-AI model that classifies contamination levels as “safe”, “caution” or “dangerous”. PharmaGuard AI is designed as a decentralised field tool, which enables rapid on-site testing without reliance on expensive laboratory methods such as ICP-MS. Although not yet physically validated, PharmaGuard AI demonstrates a feasible pathway for translating academic research into an innovative STEM solution with public health, regulatory, sustainability and transferability value across the Arab world.

Led by Achuthy Kottangal, the project developed a thermomechanical extrusion process that transforms 100 per cent polyester textile waste into recycled PET (rPET) fabric granules and injection-moulded plates, further converted into products such as recycled fibre out of fabric, secondary plastic containers, panels, tiles and other industrial applications. The research combines textile science with polymer engineering to address the growing environmental challenge of textile waste and promote circular economy practices in the UAE. The project resulted in two patents, multiple research publications and interdisciplinary sustainability awareness initiatives, demonstrating how fashion waste can be transformed into valuable resources for industrial innovation.

KAUST is now using the TVP as a de-risking platform for commercial scale-up, including a planned 30-tonne-per-day system. This research offers a scalable solution for reducing industrial pollution, conserving freshwater resources and advancing affordable green hydrogen production. Researchers at NYU Abu Dhabi developed TG-PD COF, a cationic covalent organic framework designed to rapidly detect and remove perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), a major PFAS contaminant, from water. The material combines charged binding sites with a hydrophobic porous framework, enabling strong and selective interactions with PFOA. Published in Nature Communications, the work demonstrated fluorescence detection down to 1.8 µg/L, adsorption capacities exceeding 2,600 mg/g, rapid removal within seconds under high-concentration conditions, and complete removal in column studies to below analytical detection limits. The project is now being advanced towards pilot-scale water treatment through a hybrid system combining granular activated carbon for bulk PFAS removal with TG-PD COF as a precision polishing layer, supported by AI-guided optimisation of materials and process design.

The Libyan Ministry of Higher Education officially expressed its “utmost pride” in Albaser’s achievement (March 2026), and Sebha University held a formal ceremony honouring him. He has received distinguished speaker invitations to international conferences in London, Singapore and Vienna. The Dustless Sun programme at Al-Maarif University answers this directly. Six experimental and computational studies, all published in 2025 in peer-reviewed engineering journals, integrate three pillars: dust mitigation, thermal performance recovery, and intelligent prediction. The activated carbon coating derived from spent tea grounds, the reduced graphene oxide treatment, and the Kolmogorov-Arnold prediction model each constitute novel scientific claims, not incremental refinements. The work is calibrated for Iraq but addresses the same physics across the Arab dust belt, a region of more than 200 million people. Three forward pathways are under active development, including a deployment partnership with national electricity authorities.

An-Najah National University leads BASE (Bologna for Science Education in Palestine and Jordan), an Erasmus+ funded teaching and learning transformation launched in 2024. BASE restructures four-year science bachelor’s degrees into three-year, ECTS-aligned, competency-based programmes followed by a structured professional year embedding industry-relevant microcredentials, placements and applied learning. Co-designed with ministries, national accreditation bodies, European universities and industry, BASE directly addresses declining science enrolment and high graduate unemployment in Palestine and Jordan. In 2025, the programme delivered a region-wide webinar attracting 200+ participants, advanced formal regulatory dialogue with accreditation authorities, and was awarded the Union for the Mediterranean (UfM) Label – a recognition of its strategic regional significance. The AI education gap for non-specialists is a major challenge in higher education, as AI is often limited to technical disciplines despite its growing impact across all fields. In response, King Abdulaziz University launched “Teaching the Fundamentals of Artificial Intelligence to All King Abdulaziz University Students” in partnership with the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology and Microsoft, to equip non-technical students with practical AI skills. The initiative integrates Microsoft AI content into accredited courses without requiring programming experience. It uses project-based learning aligned with Bloom’s Taxonomy and an interactive cloud environment through Azure AI services, enabling students to apply computer vision, natural language processing and generative AI while promoting responsible use. The initiative trained thousands of students and faculty, spread to several universities, improved labour market readiness, and created a scalable national model aligned with Vision 2030.

The strategy combines two core components: an innovation incubator, where students co-develop scalable pharmacy service prototypes, complete business plans that are assessed by external panels of industry leaders, clinicians, and regulatory experts; and a flipped classroom model, where students drive their own learning by researching annually refreshed, emerging healthcare topics. Technology is embedded throughout, with hands-on AI and digital health sessions enabling students to design and build the solutions they propose. Innovation is rewarded through a Top Achiever Award, SOP Conference presentations, and assessment by University College London experts. Impact is measurable: 84.2 per cent student satisfaction, 100 per cent pass rate, and Ministry of Health and Population preceptor satisfaction of 96.7 per cent to 100 per cent. The university transformed this untapped innovation reservoir into a scalable digital ecosystem that converts academic outputs into start-ups, interdisciplinary ventures and industry-connected solutions. Using advanced technologies including natural language processing, semantic clustering and AI-assisted recommendation systems, the platform identifies commercialisation opportunities, connects students across disciplines and accelerates venture creation. The system integrates AI-assisted project discovery, automated team formation, mentor and industry matching, MVP development and a multilingual virtual innovation marketplace. The system integrates academic policies, programme requirements and student data to generate structured course recommendations aligned with degree pathways. KUbee operates through a two-cycle model, forecasting course demand from student records and generating individual course plans based on availability. Recommendations are prioritised based on academic rules, prerequisites, credit limits and progression requirements. Each recommendation includes supporting reasoning, and advisers review and approve plans, maintaining academic oversight. The platform has supported over 3,000 students and generated more than 14,000 recommendations, with 72 per cent adoption. Built on a transparent nine-step methodology, it links strategic targets – 77,000 students and a 40 per cent postgraduate share by 2030 – to concrete year-by-year admissions, active-student and graduation projections across 170+ programmes, then validates them against academic workforce capacity at college level. The platform compressed KAU’s 2025-30 planning cycle from about six weeks of manual work to under 30 minutes of interactive scenario simulation, and produced the university’s first quantified gap analysis between projected teaching and supervision demand and current faculty supply. This project introduced a faculty-supervised generative AI workflow using ChatGPT to improve competency-based clinical narrative evaluation in paramedic education at King Saud University. The model used the ICHART framework to generate structured feedback on incident, chief complaint, history, assessment, intervention, transport/disposition and coherence, while faculty reviewed AI outputs to ensure clinical accuracy and academic judgement. The initiative addressed a major challenge: clinical narratives were time-consuming to evaluate and often lacked coherence. After implementation, mean ICHART scores increased from 2.89/4 to 3.86/4, total quiz scores increased from 9.13/14 to 13.53/14, and excellent performance increased from 0 per cent to 95.6 per cent. The workflow also saved an estimated 73.5 faculty hours per semester, equivalent to a 70 per cent reduction in routine marking time. The model is scalable to other health and professional disciplines that assess structured written case documentation.

In 2025, Northumbria University in Qatar transformed its admissions function through the innovative use of digital technology, data analytics and workflow redesign. The initiative addressed growing application volumes, increasing international interest and the need for faster, more accurate admissions processing across undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. Enhancements to the QFBA360 admissions platform improved application tracking, reporting dashboards, applicant segmentation, communication workflows, missing-document follow-up and management visibility. These changes enabled the admissions team to monitor the applicant journey more effectively, support timely decision-making and strengthen coordination across departments. The impact was reflected in significant admissions growth. Total applications increased from 506 in 2024 to 719 in 2025, while enrolments rose from 269 to 343. International applications and enrolments also increased, demonstrating improved reach and conversion. The initiative provides a scalable model for using digital systems and data-driven processes to improve admissions performance, applicant support and institutional planning.
